Three student-athletes named to 2009 All-MIAA Swimming and Diving Teams
Three Olivet College student-athletes -- sophomore Kellen Beckwith (Farmington Hills/North Farmington), senior Steven Davis (Davidsville, Md./DeMatha) and senior Amy Johnson (Gaylord) -- have been named to the 2009 All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) swimming and diving teams.
Three Olivet College student-athletes -- sophomore Kellen Beckwith (Farmington Hills/North Farmington), senior Steven Davis (Davidsville, Md./DeMatha) and senior Amy Johnson (Gaylord) -- have been named to the 2009 All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) swimming and diving teams. Beckwith and Davis led the Comet men to a third-place finish at the 2009 MIAA Championships, while Johnson helped the Olivet women finish in fourth-place. Beckwith and Davis have earned All-MIAA honors for the second straight year.
Davis captured the MIAA championship in the 500 freestyle. His time of 4:39.11 broke the school record. Davis also swam the leadoff leg of the 800 freestyle relay, which set a new school record in 6:59.99.Beckwith was an at-large selection after finishing second in the 100 backstroke (:50.59) and fourth in the 200 backstroke (1:53.64). During the preliminaries of the 100 backstroke, he broke the school record and recorded an NCAA Championships automatic qualifying time of 50.39 seconds. Beckwith also set a new school record in the 200 backstroke, and swam a leg in the school record-setting 200 freestyle, 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.
Johnson was first in the 50 freestyle (:23.63), third in the 100 freestyle (:51.95) and sixth in the 200 freestyle (1:56.81). She broke her own school record in all three events, while her time in the 50 was both an MIAA event record and an NCAA Championships automatic qualifying time. Johnson was also a part of the school record setting 200 freestyle (1:36.87) and 800 freestyle (7:54.85) relays.
The 2009 NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championships are March 18-21 at the University of Minnesota.
The Comets are led by second-year Head Coach Jake Taber.
