Baseball team loses doubleheader to Rochester, 9-7 and 5-0, in home-opener
The Olivet College baseball team lost both games of a non-conference doubleheader against Rochester College today in its home-opener at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet. The Comets lost the first game, 9-7, in eight innings, and were then shutout, 5-0, in the nightcap.

The Olivet College baseball team lost both games of a non-conference doubleheader against Rochester College today in its home-opener at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet. The Comets lost the first game, 9-7, in eight innings, and were then shutout, 5-0, in the nightcap.
In the first game, Olivet jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a run in the first inning. Junior Jimmy Keenan (Charlotte) hit a RBI-single to score senior Erik McCloud (Holly), who had a two-out double. The Comets added to their lead in the third inning when sophomore Austin Clark (Ossineke/Alpena) blasted a three-run home run over the fence in rightfield.
Rochester got two runs back in the top half of the fourth on a two-run homer. The Comets answered with two runs in their half of the fourth. The Warriors pushed across four unearned runs in the fifth to tie the game at 6-6. Olivet took a 7-6 lead in bottom half of the fifth on senior Matt Smoker's (Bronson) RBI-single. Rochester forced extra innings with an unearned run in the sixth. The Warriors scored two unearned runs in the eighth inning. The Comets had a runner on base in the eighth, but he was erased on a double play to end the game.
Offensively, Olivet finished the game with nine hit. Keenan and sophomore Jacob Blamer (Newaygo) led the way with two hits apiece. Junior Brad Beisiegel (Royal Oak) started on the mound and went four innings. He allowed two runs on three hits, while striking out five. Sophomore Aaron Campbell (Lansing/Waverly) threw an inning of relief and gave up four unearned runs on two hits. McCloud was charged with the loss. He pitched the final three innings, surrendering three unearned runs on two hits.
In the nightcap, Rochester scored one run in the second and third innings, two runs in the fifth and closed the scoring with a run in the seventh. Olivet was held to just four hits, including two by junior Ben Kosmalski (Canton/Plymouth). On the mound, freshman Jay Magro (Bridgman) was the losing pitcher.
The Comets (2-6) will now their attention to Hope College for their first Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association four-game series. The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday in Olivet, beginning at 1 p.m., and then Hope will host a doubleheader Monday, starting at 2 p.m.
