Volleyball team loses to No. 9 Calvin in three sets
The volleyball team fell to nationally-ranked and MIAA leader Calvin in three sets (25-21, 25-11, 25-17) tonight at The Cutler Event Center in Olivet.
OLIVET, Mich. -- The Olivet College volleyball team fell to nationally-ranked and Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association leader Calvin College in three sets (25-21, 25-11, 25-17) tonight at The Cutler Event Center in Olivet. The Knights entered the match ranked No. 9 in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25 poll.
In the first set, Olivet led by as many as four points at 20-16. Calvin then scored seven straight points to take a 23-20 lead. The Comets got one point to make the score 23-21 before the Knights scored the final two points to win the set, 25-21. Calvin led the second set from wire-to-wire, winning it 25-11. The third set was a back-and-forth affair for the first 22 points, which resulted in an 11-11 tie. The Knights scored the next point to take a 12-11 lead and went on to win the set, 25-17.
The Comets were led by sophomore Sam Gibson (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) who posted team-highs in kills with 11 and digs with six. Junior Jordy Bergeron (Muskegon/Mona Shores) was next with five kills. Senior Jenessa Hicks (Union City) collected a team-leading 10 assists.
Olivet (6-4, 3-2 MIAA) will rest tonight and then play at Kalamazoo College tomorrow at 11 a.m.
