The Olivet College men's and women's outdoor track and field teams opened their 2008 season at the Aquinas College/Grand Rapids Open.
The Olivet College men's and women's outdoor track and field teams opened their 2008 season at the Aquinas College/Grand Rapids Open.
Individually, the men posted seven top 10 performances. The highest finisher was sophomore Blake Walters (Olivet), who placed fourth in the javelin with a throw of 151 feet, 3 inches. Freshman Vince Hanna (Marshall) had a pair of top 10 performances, finishing sixth in the triple jump (38 feet, 4 inches) and eighth in the long jump (20 feet).
Sophomore William Hopson (Eau Claire) cleared the high jump bar at 5 feet, 7 inches to place seventh. Freshman Maurice Lewis (Inkster/Academy of Inkster) finished eighth in the long jump (35 feet, 4 inches).
In the 100-meter dash, sophomore Patrick Clasgens (Livonia/Stevenson) and junior Joe Cleveland (St. Joseph) were ninth and tenth, respectively. Clasgens clocked-in at 11.72 seconds, and Cleveland was .01 behind him in 11.73 seconds. In addition, Olivet's 4x100-meter relay placed fourth in 44.08 seconds.
The Olivet women had four top 10 finishes, including two for freshman Ellen Schulz (Freeland). She tied for fourth-place in the high jump (4 feet, 11 inches) and was eighth in the long jump (15 feet, 7 inches). Junior Bridget Holtz (Union/Constantine) placed seventh in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 8 feet, 6 inches.
On the track, freshman Megan McCarty (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) was credited with a ninth-place finish in the 100-meter dash. She clocked-in at 13.89 seconds. The 4x100-meter relay team finished in third-place (:53.76).
