Women’s tennis team beats Malone (Ohio), 5-4

The Olivet College women's tennis team began its spring break trip today to Hilton Head, S.C., with a 5-4 victory over Malone (Ohio) College.

The Comets (2-1) won two-of-three doubles and three-of-six singles matches to gain the win. In doubles, the No. 1 tandem of Abbie Utberg (Commerce Twp./Walled Lake Central) and Rachel Vilums (Hudsonville) and the No. 3 tandem of Mallory Bailey (Kalamazoo/Loy Norrix) and Corey Jager (Kalamazoo/Loy Norrix) won. Utberg/Vilums' pro-set score was 9-7, and Bailey/Jager's score was 8-1.

In singles play, Vilums picked-up a straight set win at the No. 1 position, 6-3, 6-1. Jaime Morrison (Marshall) claimed a three-set victory, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, at the No. 5 flight. The match came down the No. 6 singles position where Utberg claimed a 6-4, 6-4 win.

Olivet continues its spring break trip with a match tomorrow against Bridgewater (Va.) College at noon.
