Women’s swimming team places seventh at Calvin Winter Invitational
The women’s swimming team placed seventh at the 2010 Calvin Winter Invitational inside the Venema Aquatic Center in Grand Rapids. Among MIAA rivals, the Comets scored 157 points and were third behind Calvin (549) and Kalamazoo (464.5) but ahead of Alma (140) and Saint Mary’s (102).
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Olivet College women's swimming team placed seventh at the 2010 Calvin College Winter Invitational inside the Venema Aquatic Center in Grand Rapids. Among MIAA rivals, the Comets scored 157 points and were third behind Calvin (549) and Kalamazoo (464.5) but ahead of Alma (140) and Saint Mary's (102). Grand Valley State University captured the championship with 1,223 points.
In Thursday's first day of action, junior Jessica Howard (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) was Olivet's top finisher in the 1,650 freestyle, as she finished 19th in 19:26.06. The 800 freestyle team of Kristin Long (Pemberville, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy), Howard, Camieo Green (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) and sophomore Erica Schlabach (Goshen, Ind./Northridge) was 10th overall and third among NCAA Division III schools with a time of 8:26.14.
In Friday's action, Lohr finished in second-place in the 50 freestyle, touchingthe wall in 23.80 seconds to finish just behind Grand Valley's Kimberly Baughman. In the morning preliminaries, she had the fastest time and recorded an NCAA "B" cut time of 23.74 seconds. The 200 freestyle relay team of sophomore Jana Blodgett (Sturgis), freshman Ally Ramer (Holt), junior Emily LaPorta (Hamilton) and Lohr finished in seventh-place and their time was 1:41.81.
In the 400 individual medley, Long took the top spot in the consolation final, finishing ninth overall with a school record time of 4:51.31. Schlabach placed 14th in the 200 butterfly (2:25.32). In the 100 breaststroke, sophomore Crystal Jager (Dorr/Hamilton) finished in 11th-place (1:09.53). Schlabach had her second 14th-place, stopping the clock in 5:03.16.
The 400 medley relay team of freshman Jacalyn Cordero (Holland), Jager, Schlabach and Ramer scored 11th-place points with a time of 4:16.43.
In Saturday's third day of action, the 200 medley relay team of Cordero, Jager, Lohr and Emily LaPorta scored fifth-place points with a time of 1:53.25.
Lohr was eighth in the 100 butterfly (1:05.85). Long finished in 14th-place in the 200 individual medley (2:19.59) and 16th in the 200 backstroke (2:22.85).
The Comets will resume their Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association schedule Saturday, Jan. 15, 2011, with a dual meet at Saint Mary's (Ind.) College at 1 p.m.
