Women's swim and dive team stands in fourth-place at 2005 MIAA Championships
The women’s swimming and diving team stands in fourth-place after the second day of the 2005 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Championships hosted by Hope College at the Holland Community Aquatic Center.
The women’s swimming and diving team stands in fourth-place after the second day of the 2005 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Championships hosted by Hope College at the Holland Community Aquatic Center. The Lady Comets have 176 points. Calvin College leads the way with 363 points.
Leading the way for the Olivet was junior Jill Lingbeek (Plainwell), who captured the conference championship in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke with NCAA championships automatic qualifying times in both events. Lingbeek won the butterfly in 57.32 seconds, which is also a school and MIAA record. Her school-record time in the backstroke was 58.71 seconds. The Comets crowned their first conference champion since the 2000 season when Megan Spaulding won the 100 backstroke.
In the 100 backstroke, Lingbeek led an Olivet 1-2 finish as sophomore Katherine Roesch (Oakland Twp./Lake Orion) was second (1:00.96). In the 100 breaststroke, freshman Caroline Schroeder (Marshall) touched the wall in fifth-place (1:11.28).
The 200 medley relay team of Lingbeek, Roesch, Schroeder and Caitlin Cornell (Corunna) clocked in with a fourth-place finish (1:53.46). Roesch, Sarah Boyd (Napoleon, Ohio), Laura Herzog (St. Joseph) and Janet Stam (Holland) swam to a fourth-place finish in the 800 free relay (8:13.22).
Saturday’s action begins with preliminaries at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
