Women's swimming and diving teams doubles up Albion, 160-80
The women’s swimming and diving team won 12 of 13 events en route to a 160-80 victory over Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) rival Albion College this afternoon at the Upton Center Pool in Olivet.
The women’s swimming and diving team won 12 of 13 events en route to a 160-80 victory over Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) rival Albion College this afternoon at the Upton Center Pool in Olivet.
In dual meets, any competitor is allowed to compete in up to three events, including relays. Junior Jill Lingbeek (Plainwell) and sophomore Katherine Roesch (Oakland Twp./Lake Orion) swam in three individual events apiece and swam away with a first-place finish in each event.
Lingbeek won the 50 freestyle in 25.24 seconds, the 100 freestyle in 55.70 seconds and the 200 backstroke in 2:23.32. Roesch captured the 1000 freestyle in 11:04.46, the 200 individual medley in 2:17.53 and the 500 freestyle in 5:25.23. Roesch shattered the school record by nearly 16 seconds in the 1000 free and 200 IM.
The Lady Comets picked-up six additional first-place finishes – Kristin Bloomquist (Holt) in the one-meter dive (214.05 points), Laura Herzog (St. Joseph) in the 200 freestyle (2:02.86), Katie Kilmartin (Wayland) in the 200 breaststroke (school-record time of 2:34.32) and Rachel Tunison (Erie/Mason) in the 200 butterfly (2:28.27) along with the 400 medley (4:19.45) and 400 freestyle (3:55.92) relays.
Swimming on the 400 medley relay were Kilmartin, Tunison, Christina Coxon (Mason) and Janet Stam (Holland). The 400 freestyle relay was Herzog, Stam, Sarah Boyd (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon) and Ashley Zaborski (Battle Creek/Harper Creek).
In addition, Olivet had four runner-up finishes, Boyd in the 200 freestyle (2:04.21) and 500 freestyle (5:32.02), Herzog in the 200 butterfly (2:29.45) and Stam in the 100 freestyle (56.91).
Olivet will host Alma College in a MIAA dual meet next Saturday, Jan. 22, at 1 p.m.
