Women's swimming and diving team defeats Kalamazoo and Saint Mary's (Ind.)
In dramatic fashion, the Olivet College women’s swimming and diving team defeated Kalamazoo College and Saint Mary’s (Ind.) College in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association double dual meet on Friday evening in Kalamazoo. The Lady Comets beat the Hornets, 121-118, and Belles, 126-95.

By virtue of winning the final event (200 freestyle relay), Olivet edged the SMC team by .10 seconds and Kalamazoo by .19 seconds. Caitlin Cornell (Corunna High School), Laura Herzog (St. Joseph High School), Kristi Miller (Marshall High School) and Janet Stam (Holland High School) broke the school record with a time of 1:44.49.
Leading the way for the Comets was Kristin Bloomquist (Holt High School) and Katherine Roesch (Oakland Twp./Lake Orion High School). Bloomquist captured the one- and three-meter dives with scores of 225.30 and 211.85, respectively. Roesch won the 200 individual medley (2:20.79) and 100 backstroke (1:03.06).
In addition, Jill Lingbeek (Plainwell High School) set a school record in the 100 butterfly (1:03.03). Stam broke her own school record in the 100 freestyle (55.91) by .01 seconds.
Olivet will next be in action on Friday-Saturday, January 23-24, when it travels to Ohio for a pair of non-league dual meets. On Friday evening, the Comets will compete at Oberlin College, and on Saturday, they will compete against John Carroll University.
