ALBION, Mich. – The Olivet College women's soccer team tied Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) rival Albion College, 1-1, in double overtime today at Alumni Field in Albion. Despite the tie, the Comets have clinched a berth in the 2015 MIAA Tournament.
The game started off very evenly between the two teams, with both looking to keep possession and find their first goals. Olivet tried to make moves around the Briton's defense but did not find success. Players like senior Lauren Vanderhoff and sophomore Madeline Maxwell added shots on goal for the Comets but could not find the back of the net.
At the 35-minute mark of the half, sophomore Isabelle Leon was fouled in the box which drew a penalty kick for the Comets. Vanderhoff stepped up and buried the ball into the net to put Olivet up, 1-0.
To begin the second half, the Comets were looking to keep the lead and find more opportunities. Going against the wind, Olivet struggled to get forward. Leon and senior Megan Peplinski added shots in the second half.
In the 75th minute, Albion had a corner which they successfully scored on to even the score. The tie held for the rest of regulation time.
Both overtimes went scoreless. For the game, Olivet led the game in shots with a total of 12 to Albion's nine.
Senior Deanna Zolnoski played all 110 minutes in goal for the Comets and made seven saves.
Olivet celebrates senior day Saturday when it welcomes Calvin College to the Cutler Athletic Complex for a 2:30 p.m. game.
