OLIVET, Mich. – Sophomore Lindsey Winters (Plymouth/Canton) scored twice to lead the Olivet College women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Trine (Ind.) University today at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet. With the win, Olivet has now won two of its last three games.
Winters scored her first goal in the 39th minute. She took a shot from about 40 yards out that sailed over the goalkeeper's head and into the upper half of the net. That was the only goal of the first half. The Thunder scored the equalizer with five minutes and 14 seconds left in the second half.
The game appeared to be heading to overtime. A throw in by sophomore Jenna Mayle (Ionia) found the feet of Winters near the back line. Winters dribbled a couple times, and her shot snuck just inside the near post for the game-winner with 3:22 remaining.
The Comets recorded 14 shots, including placing 12 on goal. Winters led the way with four, followed by junior Becca Gaarde (Parma/Western) with three. Freshman Patty Groh (Mason) made five saves, while facing 12 shots in 90 minutes of action in goal.
Olivet hosts Saint Mary's (Ind.) College Saturday at noon.
