Women’s soccer team loses to Hope, 4-1, in home-opener

OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College women's soccer team fell to Hope College, 4-1, today in its home-opener at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
The Flying Dutch got on the scoreboard just 20 seconds into the contest. Hope scored another goal in the 26th minute to take a 2-0 halftime lead. The Flying Dutch increased their lead to 3-0 on a shot from just inside the 18-yard box that rattled off the cross bar and into the goal.
Olivet scored its goal in the 74th minute. The Hope goalkeeper was called for a foul when she carried the ball outside the box. Sophomore Marcee Lettinga (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Central) sent her shot past the keeper for the goal. The Flying Dutch capped the scoring with a goal at the 79:01 mark.
The Comets finished the game with a 17-16 advantage in shots. Junior Becca Gaarde (Parma/Western) led the way with four. Sophomore Lindsey Winters (Plymouth/Canton) took three shots, including two on-goal. Freshman Patty Groh (Mason) played all 90 minutes in goal and made six saves.
Olivet will play two more road games this week. On Thursday, the Comets travel to play Kalamazoo College at 4 p.m., and on Saturday, they play Calvin College at noon.
