OLIVET, Mich. -- The Olivet College women's soccer team ended its season with a 2-0 loss to Adrian College in the first round of the 2010 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament today at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet. With the win, Adrian advances to play top-seed Alma College in the semifinals Tuesday and with the loss, Olivet finishes its season with a 13-5-2 overall record.
The Comets had a great chance to take an early lead when senior Cara Underwood (Holland) had her shot glance off the top of the crossbar. Each team took five shots in the first half. The scored stayed scoreless until the 65th minute when Bethany Cousino scored for the Bulldogs. After Olivet's defense failed to clear the ball out of the 18-yard box, Cousino gathered the loose ball and sent a shot that just snuck into the net at the near post.
Adrian added another goal about six minutes later on Anika Johnson's goal. The Comets did not go down without a fight, as they outshot the Bulldogs, 7-0, in the final 19 minutes of the game. A couple headers by junior Lizzy Julian (Mattawan) sailed just a little high above the cross.
For the game, Olivet had a 19-9 advantage in shots; however, shots-on-goal were even at seven for each team. Julian led the way with seven shots, followed by freshman Katie Clayton (Kingsley/Traverse City Central) with five. Senior Megan Colby (Sparta/Cedar Springs) played all 90 minutes in goal and made five saves.
