NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- The Olivet College women's soccer team hung on for a 2-1 victory over Saint Mary's (Ind.) College today in Notre Dame, Ind.
The Comets jumped out to a 2-0 lead with goals by junior Lizzy Julian (Mattawan) in the seventh minute and senior Ashley Buyce (Portage/Portage Northern) in the 19th minute. Julian's goal was unassisted, while Buyce's was assisted by freshman Katie Clayton (Kingsley/Traverse City Central). The Belles cut their deficit to one with a goal just 8:47 left before halftime. There was no scoring in the second half.
For the game, Olivet was out-shot 19-10, but shots-on-goal were much closer, 7-6 in favor of Saint Mary's. Buyce and Clayton led the Comets with three shots apiece. Freshman Lindsey Winters (Plymouth/Canton) took two shots. Senior Alyssa Budros (Traverse City/Central) played the entire game in goal and recorded six saves.
Olivet will play its final regular season game next Wednesday, Oct. 27, when it hosts Calvin College at 4 p.m. The Comets are tied with Calvin for second-place in the league standings with 13 points apiece. Before playing at Olivet next week, Calvin plays at Albion on Saturday.
