Wrestling team places fourth at Spartan Mat Classic
The Olivet College wrestling team placed fourth of 10 teams today at the Manchester (Ind.) College Spartan Mat Classic. The Comets collected 142 total points, which was one point behind third-place Manchester, 23 behind second-place College of Mount St. Joseph (Ohio) and 53.5 points behind team champion University of Cumberlands (Ky.).
N. MANCHESTER, Ind. – The Olivet College wrestling team placed fourth of 10 teams today at the Manchester (Ind.) College Spartan Mat Classic. The Comets collected 142 total points, which was one point behind third-place Manchester, 23 behind second-place College of Mount St. Joseph (Ohio) and 53.5 points behind team champion University of Cumberlands (Ky.).
Using a varsity lineup of reserves, sophomore Henry McKeown (Bellevue/Olivet) and freshman Dan Fleet (Ada/Lowell) finished in third-place at 125 and 157 pounds, respectively. McKeown posted a 4-1 record, including a 7-6 decision in the third-place match. Fleet also went 4-1 with a 4-0 win in his third-place match.
Sophomore Justin Holm (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) and freshman Kyle Witgen (Romeo) both placed fourth at 141 and 149 pounds, respectively. Holm was 4-2, while Witgen went 3-2.
Other placers were sophomore Michael Gancer (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) in fifth at 133 pounds, sophomore Connor Sharp (Schoolcraft) in fifth at 174 pounds, sophomore Andrew Simpson (Tecumseh) in fifth at 197 pounds and sophomore Rocky Cantu (Rives Junction/Jackson Northwest) in seventh at 165 pounds.
The Comets are back in action next Thursday, Jan. 19, when it hosts Eastern Michigan University. The match from inside The Cutler Event Center gets started at 7 p.m.
