Wrestling team beats Manchester, 38-8, in "Throwback Match"
The Olivet College wrestling team won 8-of-10 bouts, including scoring bonus points in six wins, and the Comets defeated Manchester (Ind.) College, 38-8, tonight in a “Throwback Match” at MacKay Gymnasium in Olivet. Olivet, ranked No. 8 in this week’s National Wrestling Coaches Association poll, improved its dual match record to 12-4.
OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College wrestling team won 8-of-10 bouts, including scoring bonus points in six wins, and the Comets defeated Manchester (Ind.) College, 38-8, tonight in a "Throwback Match" at MacKay Gymnasium in Olivet. Olivet, ranked No. 8 in this week's National Wrestling Coaches Association poll, improved its dual match record to 12-4.
At 125 pounds, sophomore Henry McKeown (Bellevue/Olivet) was able to get the Comets off to a fast start by pinning Garth Simpson with just two seconds remaining in the bout. Juniors Kam Olsen (Kentwood/East Kentwood) and Kenny Richmond (Brighton) earned forfeit wins at 133 and 141 pounds, respectively.
Olivet lost each of the next two bouts by major decision. At 165 pounds, junior James Myers (Monroe/Indian Creek) put an end to that scoring run for the Spartans quickly by pinning Chandler Pague in only 36 seconds.
At 174 pounds, senior Trevor Tyler (Roscommon) won a 9-1 major decision. At 184 pounds, junior Josh Crawford (Birch Run) used a takedown in overtime to win, 6-4. At 197 pounds, sophomore Andrew Simpson (Tecumseh) scored a takedown late in the bout to gain a 3-1 victory. At 285 pounds, junior Jake Ceslick (Alpena) overwhelmed Jimmy King, 12-4.
The Comets return to the mats Saturday at the Manchester Spartan Mat Classic. Action starts at 9 a.m.
