Wrestling team opens 2011-12 season with 31-12 win at Heidelberg
The Olivet College wrestling team kicked off its 2011-12 season with a 31-12 win against Heidelberg (Ohio) University tonight at Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin, Ohio. Olivet won 7-of-10 matches, including scoring bonus points in five with two pins, one technical fall and two major decisions.
TIFFIN, Ohio – The Olivet College wrestling team kicked off its 2011-12 season with a 31-12 win against Heidelberg (Ohio) University tonight at Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin, Ohio. Olivet won 7-of-10 matches, including scoring bonus points in five with two pins, one technical fall and two major decisions.
At 125 pounds, sophomore Robbie Bidlingmaier (Chesterfield Twp./Anchor Bay) got the Comets off to a fast start by pinning Delian Schneider in 7:20. At 133 pounds, junior Kam Olsen (Kentwood/East Kentwood) kept the winning going with a 9-1 major decision win over Steve Harmon.
Junior Kenny Richmond (Brighton) edged Chris Osborne, 7-6, at 141 pounds. The Student Princes won the next two matches to close their deficit down to four points, 13-9.
Junior James Myers (Monroe/Indian Creek (Ohio)), a 2011 NCAA All-American and ranked No. 2 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association poll at 165 pounds, got Olivet back on track with an 18-2 technical fall win over Ian Gillespie. At 174 pounds, senior Trevor Tyler (Roscommon), a NCAA D3 National Championships qualifier, pinned Dylan Norwood in 4:34 to extend the Comets' lead to 15 points, 24-9.
Junior Josh Crawford (Birch Run) sealed Olivet's win with a 4-3 over Jeremy Stepp at 184 pounds. Heidelberg got a 3-0 win at 197 pounds. Junior Logan Renas (Big Rapids) capped the Comets' win with a 16-6 major decision win over Jerry Knapp at 285 pounds.
Olivet returns to the mats Saturday when it participates in the Michigan State Open at the Jenison Field House in East Lansing.
