Wrestling team opens season with 18-18 tie against Heidelberg
The wrestling team opened its 2010-11 season with an 18-18 tie against Heidelberg tonight at The Cutler Event Center in Olivet. The two teams split the 10 individual matches and outcome of the match was not decided until the conclusion of the final one of the night.
OLIVET, Mich. -- The Olivet College wrestling team opened its 2010-11 season with an 18-18 tie against Heidelberg (Ohio) University tonight at The Cutler Event Center in Olivet. The two teams split the 10 individual matches and outcome of the match was not decided until the conclusion of the final one of the night.
The Comets took an 11-0 lead with wins in the first three weight classes. Junior Justin Fleeson (Belleville) at 125 pounds and senior Adam Wilson (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) at 133 pounds posted 4-2 and 7-3 minor decision victories, respectively. Sophomore Kenny Richmond (Brighton) at 141 pounds recorded a 17-2 technical fall victory.
The Student Princes, ranked No. 27 in the preseason National Wrestling Coaches Association poll, won three straight matches by minor decision to cut their deficit to two points, 11-9. Olivet answered with a 12-9 decision win by junior Trevor Tyler (Roscommon) at 174 pounds and 13-4 major decision win by senior Jim Neal (Marysville) at 184 pounds to go up nine points, 18-9. Heidelberg forced the ending tie with a pin at 197 pounds and a minor decision win at 285 pounds.
The Comets return to action next Tuesday, Nov. 16, when they host University of Chicago at 7 p.m. The match will be held at the MacKay Gymnasium due to the home-opener for the Olivet women's basketball team.
