Wrestling team wins three matches at Wheaton Duals
The wrestling team won its three matches today at the Wheaton (Ill.) College Duals. The Comets started the day with a 20-16 win over Augustana , and then defeated Concordia (Wis.), 37-4, and the host Thunder, 40-3.
WHEATON, Ill. -- The Olivet College wrestling team won its three matches today at the Wheaton (Ill.) College Duals at King Arena in Wheaton, Illinois. The Comets started the day with a 20-16 win over Augustana (Ill.) College, and then defeated Concordia (Wis.) University, 37-4, and the host Thunder, 40-3.
Against Augustana, the teams split the 10 bouts with the outcome not decided until the final one. The overall difference in the match was Olivet won two bouts by technical fall and another one by major decision. Sophomores Kenny Richmond (Brighton) and James Myers (Wintersville, Ohio/Indian Creek) earned 5-3 and 9-6 minor decision victories at 133 and 165, respectively. Senior Jim Neal (Marysville) and sophomore Logan Renas (Big Rapids) posted the technical fall wins at 184 and 285, respectively. Junior Justin Leonard (Webberville) won by major decision, 9-1, at 197.
Against Concordia, the Comets won 9-of-10 bouts. Five were by decision, one by major decision, two by fall and one by forfeit. Recording decision victories were Richmond, 4-3, at 133; freshman Justin Holm (Battle Creek/Harper Creek), 2-0, at 141; freshman Jeremy Ward (Washigton Twp./Romeo), 8-5, at 149; Leonard, 7-4, at 197; and sophomore Jake Ceslick (Alpena), 8-2; at 285.
Winning by major decision was senior Adam Wilson (Battle Creek/Harper Creek), 12-4; at 125. Pinning their opponents were Jeff Holm (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) in 2:25 at 184 and sophomore Josh Crawford (Birch Run) in 1:13 at 197. The forfeit victory was earned by freshman Matt Willming (Chesterfield Twp./Anchor Bay) at 157.
Against Wheaton, Olivet also won 9-of-10 bouts, including the first three by forfeit for Wilson at 125, Richmond at 133 and Justin Holm at 141. Four of the other wins were by fall, as Willming pinned his opponent in 2:07 at 157, Jeff Holm in 3:20 at 174, Leonard in 1:09 at 197 and Renas in 1:49 at 285. Myers posted a 17-2 technical fall win at 165. The only decision victory was 5-4 by Ward at 149.
The Comets will return to Wheaton next Friday and Saturday, Jan. 28-29, for the 68th Annual Pete Willson Invitational. Action starts Friday morning at 11 a.m. CT, and resumes Saturday morning at 9 a.m. CT.
