Wrestling team beats Chicago, 35-6
The wrestling team won eight of 10 matches, including three by pin, en route to a 35-6 win over University of Chicago tonight at the Mackay Gymnasium in Olivet.
OLIVET, Mich. -- The Olivet College wrestling team won eight of 10 matches, including three by pin, en route to a 35-6 win over University of Chicago tonight at the Mackay Gymnasium in Olivet.
Junior Justin Fleeson (Belleville) used a big third period to win 9-4 win at 125 pounds. Leading by a point to start the third period, he chose down and got a reversal to go back up by three points, 7-3. His opponent got out but another takedown and the riding point created the final margin of victory.
At 133 pounds, senior Adam Wilson (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) pinned his opponent just 11 seconds into the second period. He was leading by a 11-1 score at the time of the fall. Olivet then lost back-to-back matches at 141 and 149 pounds.
Sophomore James Myers (Wintersville, Ohio/Indian Creek) followed with a 10-2 major decision win 157 pounds. He used a takedown and three-point near fall in the first and third periods to propel him to the win. At 165 pounds, junior Steven Mena (Martin) won 6-4. With the score tied at 3-3 at the start of the third period, he elected to go down and got a reversal to make the score 5-3. An escape made the score 5-4, but the riding time point created the two-point difference in the match.
The Comets then got back-to-back first period pins to extend their team score lead to 28-6. At 174 pounds, junior Trevor Tyler (Roscommon) pinned his opponent at 2:16, while at 184 pounds, sophomore Josh Crawford (Birch Run) pinned his opponent with just five seconds remaining in the period.
Junior Justin Leonard (Webberville) used five takedowns in the match to post a 12-3 major decision victory at 197 pounds. At 285 pounds, sophomore Jake Ceslick (Alpena) rallied to win his match. He led 3-2 after the first period. His opponent went down to the start the second period and got an escape to tie the match at 3-3. Ceslick chose the same option to start the final period, and he was also able to escape to pull out the win.
Olivet hosts its annual Comet Duals Saturday, Nov. 20, at The Cutler Event Center. Action gets under way at 10 a.m.
