Wrestling team has 1-1 record against D1 competition at 22nd Annual Wendy’s Duals
The wrestling team posted a 1-1 record against NCAA Division I competition today at the 22nd Annual Wendy’s Classic Duals. In their first match, the Comets fell to Eastern Michigan University, 29-6, before bouncing back to beat Gardner-Webb (N.C.) University, 23-13.
ASHLAND, Ohio -- The Olivet College wrestling team posted a 1-1 record against NCAA Division I competition today at the 22nd Annual Wendy's Classic Duals, hosted by Ashland (Ohio) University and inside the Kates Gymnasium in Ashland, Ohio. In their first match, the Comets fell to Eastern Michigan University, 29-6, before bouncing back to beat Gardner-Webb (N.C.) University, 23-13.
The only wins for Olivet against Eastern Michigan came at 141 points where senior Vince Tucker (Clio) won 19-7 and 197 pounds where junior Justin Leonard (Webberville) won 4-0.
The Comets raced out to a 7-0 lead against Gardner-Webb. At 125 pounds, senior Adam Wilson (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) earned a hard fought 5-3 win. Sophomore Kenny Richmond (Brighton) then had an 11-1 win at 133 pounds. The Bulldogs responded with three straight wins to take a 10-7 lead. Senior Justin Jaynes (Richmond) tied the match at 10-10 with a 3-2 win at 165 pounds.
Junior Trevor Tyler (Roscommon) and senior Jim Neal (Marysville) put Olivet ahead for good with 11-4 and 11-1 wins at 174 and 184 pounds, respectively. The Comets lost a close 4-3 match at 197 pounds. Sophomore Logan Renas (Big Rapids) closed the match by claiming forfeit victory at 285 pounds.
Olivet is now off until next Saturday, Jan. 22, when it participates in the Wheaton (Ill.) College Duals.
