Wrestling team finishes in seventh-place at Bud Whitehill Duals
The Olivet College wrestling team finished in seventh-place at the two-day Bud Whitehill Duals, which was hosted by Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pa.
The Olivet College wrestling team finished in seventh-place at the two-day Bud Whitehill Duals, which was hosted by Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pa. In today's first match, the Comets defeated Messiah (Pa.) College, 23-13. In the next match, Ohio Northern University squeezed past Olivet, 18-16, and in their final match, the Comets fell to York (Pa.) College, 22-21.
Against Messiah, Olivet won seven bouts. Sophomore Justin Fleeson (Belleville) and junior Vince Tucker (Clio) posted 7-5 and 11-6 minor decisions at 125 and 141 pounds, respectively. Junior Adam Wilson (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) earned a 13-2 major decision at 133 pounds.
Sophomore Trevor Tyler (Roscommon) also posted a major decision win, 16-3, at 174 pounds. The Comets closed the match with three straight wins by minor decision – freshman 184-pounder Josh Crawford (Birch Run), 6-4; senior 197-pounder Joe McAllister (Sault Ste. Marie), 2-0; and freshman heavyweight Jake Ceslick (Alpena), 5-3.
Olivet and Ohio Northern split the 10 bouts. A 3-0 Ohio Northern win in the final bout made the difference in the match. The Comets won the first four matches. Sophomore Corey Mykolatis (Constantine/Three Rivers) had a 13-4 major decision at 125 pounds. Wilson won 7-2 at 133, freshman Kenny Richmond (Brighton) won 8-4 at 141 pounds. Tucker was bumped up a weight class and won, 12-5. The fifth Olivet win was a 3-0 decision by McAllister at 197 pounds.
York won the first two bouts, the Comets won five straight and York won the final three, including a pin at heavyweight. Richmond and sophomore Steven Mena (Martin) had major decision victories, Richmond, 12-2, at 141 pounds; and Mena, 10-0 at 149 pounds. Senior Nick Leon (Sterling Heights/Henry Ford II) won 3-0 at 157 pounds. Sophomore Justin Jaynes (Marysville) pinned his opponent in 1:47 at 165 pounds.
Olivet will travel to Angola, Ind., Tuesday, Jan. 19 to wrestle Trine (Ind.) University. Match will start at 7 p.m.
