Wrestling team finishes in fifth-place at Ashland Invitational
The Olivet College wrestling team collected 70.5 points en route to a fifth-place finish today at the 10th Annual Ashland University Simonson Construction Services Invitational at the Concord Field House in Ashland, Ohio.
The Olivet College wrestling team collected 70.5 points en route to a fifth-place finish today at the 10th Annual Ashland University Simonson Construction Services Invitational at the Concord Field House in Ashland, Ohio.
The Comets' starting lineup record one second-place, two third-place, one fifth-place and three sixth-place finishes. The lone runner-up finish was by senior Daron Cruickshank (Inkster/John Glenn) at 165 pounds, recording a 3-1 record. He was pinned in his championship match.
Third-place finishes were by junior Jason Brew (Sparta) at 157 pounds and sophomore Joe Yurisich (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) at 197 pounds. Brew posted a 3-1 record, including a 3-1 win in the third-place match. Yurisich had a 2-1 record, and won the third-place match on a technical fall (3:03, 18-2).
Freshman 149-pounder Vince Lahar (Clio) comes home with a fifth-place in his first collegiate invitational. The sixth-place finishers were junior 133-pounder David Szokola (Marysville), junior 141-pounder Rob Yahrmarkt (Sparta) and junior 174-pounder Kyle Vanderhyde (Sparta).
Olivet will be in action next Friday, Dec. 7, when it travels to Tifftin, Ohio, for a dual match against Heidelberg (Ohio) College. Action gets under way at 7:30 p.m. The dual will be a battle of Top 10 teams. Heidelberg is ranked No. 4 in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association Poll, while the Comets are ranked No. 9.
