Wrestling team posts 2-2 record at Comet Duals

The Olivet College wrestling team split its four matches today at the 2007 Comet Duals at the Olivet High School. The Comets defeated Mount Union (Ohio) College, 27-12, and Ohio Northern University, 32-13. Olivet dropped a 24-18 decision to University of Wisc.-Stevens Point and 33-6 decision to University of Wisc.-LaCrosse.

In their first match against Stevens Point, the Comets won four-of-10 bouts. Junior 133-pounder David Szokola (Marysville) grabbed a forfeit win. Freshman 149-pounder Vince Lahar (Clio) earned a win in his first collegiate bout, 3-1. Junior 157-pounder Jason Brew (Sparta) won, 4-3. Junior 174-pounder Kyle Vanderhyde (Sparta) recorded a first-period pin, 1:33.

Against Ohio Northern, Olivet had seven wins – two by minor decision, two by major decision, two by fall and one by unsportsmanlike conduct (UC). Szokola and junior 141-pounder Rob Yahrmarkt (Sparta) each won by minor decision, 6-4 and 10-7, respectively. Brew and Lahar had the major decision victories, 14-4 and 13-5, respectively. Junior 184-pounder Aaron Stewart (Dansville) pinned his opponent in 1:07, while sophomore 197-pounder Joey Yurisich (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) pinned his opponent in 2:47. Vanderhyde earned the UC win.

Against Mount Union, the Comets posted seven wins – three each by minor and major decision and one by pin. Brew and Lahar won their second consecutive match by major decision, 8-0 and 12-3, respectively. Yahrmarkt also earned a major decision win, 10-1. Recording the minor decision wins were freshman 125-pounder Ibrahim Abdulla (Dearborn/Fordson), 4-1; freshman 174-pounder Justin Jaynes (Richmond), 6-4; and sophomore 184-pounder Joe Bargerstock (Livonia/Churchill), 7-1. Senior Tucker Surbrook (Potterville) had a first-period pin in 1:39.

Against LaCrosse, Olivet managed only two minor decision victories. Brew finished a perfect 4-0 on the day with a 5-2 win. Junior 125-pounder Kyle Labrecque (Battle Creek/Lakeview) earned a 3-2 win.

The Comets are now idle until Saturday, Dec. 1, when they participate in the 10th Annual Ashland (Ohio) University Simonson Construction Services Invitational. Action gets under way at 10 a.m.
