Wrestling team finishes in first-place at MSOE Invitational
The Olivet College wrestling team crowned six individual champions and finished in first-place (out of eight schools) today at the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) Invitational at the Kern Center in Milwaukee, Wisc. In addition, freshman Jason Brew (Sparta) was the champ at 149 pounds and was selected as the invitational’s Most Outstanding Wrestler.

In addition, freshman Jason Brew (Sparta) was the champ at 149 pounds and was selected as the invitational’s Most Outstanding Wrestler.
The other five individual champs were by freshman 125-pounder Kyle Labrecque (Battle Creek/Lakeview), senior 157-pounder Mike Daubenmeyer (Macomb/Lutheran North), freshman 165-pounder Kyle Vanderhyde (Sparta), senior 184-pounder Ryan Newberry (Grand Junction/South Haven) and freshman heavyweight Keith Sterly (Petoskey).
Labrecque had a 2-0 record. Brew was 4-0 with two wins by pin (:30 and 2:58) and two decisions, including 8-5 in the championship match. Daubenmeyer finished with a 4-0 record. Vanderhyde was also 4-0 with one win via pin (1:12). Newberry’s four wins were a decision, technical fall, pin (5:48) and 10-2 major decision win in the championship bout. Sterly tallied a 4-0 record.
Sophomore 197-pounder Tucker Surbrook (Potterville) was the runner-up with a 2-1 mark. Senior 174-pounder Mike Andrews (Swartz Creek) was third with a 5-1 record, including two wins by pin (2:52 and 1:52). With his third victory, he recorded his 100th career win at Olivet.
The Comets are idle until Saturday, Dec. 10, when it participates in the Ohio Northern University Invitational. Action from the ONU Sports Center begins at 9 a.m.
