Wrestling team has 3-0-1 record at Comet Duals
The Olivet College wrestling team had a 3-0-1 record today at the annual Comet Duals, which was held at the Olivet high and middle school gyms.
The Olivet College wrestling team had a 3-0-1 record today at the annual Comet Duals, which was held at the Olivet high and middle school gyms. The Comets beat nationally-ranked foes Ohio Northern University (25-18) and University of Wisc.-Stevens Point (22-15) along with Baldwin-Wallace (Ohio) College (20-14). The tie (16-16) was against nationally-ranked Lycoming (Pa.) College.
For the day, three Olivet wrestlers – junior 165-pounder Ken Andrews (Swartz Creek), freshman 149-pounder Jason Brew (Sparta) and freshman 174-pounder Kyle Vanderhyde (Sparta) had a perfect 3-0 record. Andrews won two matches by decision (3-2 and 5-4). He was rewarded another win when the Stevens Point wrestler was disqualified. Brew had two major decision wins (12-2 and 12-4) and a decision win (7-3). All three of Vanderhyde’s wins were by decision (3-1 in overtime, 2-0 and 4-1).
The Comets also had four wrestlers finish the day with a 2-1 mark. Junior 157-pounder Mike Daubenmeyer (Macomb/Lutheran North) picked-up decision victories (4-1 and 4-2). Senior 133-pounder Kefentse Mandisa (Westland/John Glenn) recorded two 13-4 major decision wins. Senior Ryan Newberry (Grand Junction/South Haven) had a major decision (18-4) and decision 9-5) victory. Freshman heavyweight Keith Sterly (Petoskey) posted two shutout victories (11-0 and 5-0).
In addition, six wrestlers picked-up a win apiece. Junior 165-pounder Eric Bryan (Fremont, Ind.), 6-2; sophomore 174-pounder Dayne Fletke (Middleville/Thornapple Kellogg), fall (2:33); freshman 141-pounder Phil Goodrich (Union City), 7-2; sophomore 197-pounder Aaron Stewart (Dansville), forfeit; freshman 133-pounder David Szokola (Marysville), 16-15; and freshman 141-pounder Rob Yahrmarkt (Sparta), 20-9.
Olivet is idle until Tuesday, Nov. 29, when it wrestles at Tri-State (Ind.) University at 7 p.m.
