Wrestling team claims championship at 2006 Wabash Monon Bell Classic
The Olivet College wrestling team had a 3-0 record today to claim the team championship at the 2006 Wabash (Ind.) College Monon Bell Classic. With the wins, the Comets end the dual meet portion of their schedule with a 16-1-1 record.

The Olivet College wrestling team had a 3-0 record today to claim the team championship at the 2006 Wabash (Ind.) College Monon Bell Classic. With the wins, the Comets end the dual meet portion of their schedule with a 16-1-1 record.
Olivet, ranked No. 11 in the latest NCAA Division III rankings, opened the day with a 25-15 win over the University of Indianapolis, the No. 19 team in NCAA Division II rankings. The Comets then beat Manchester (Ind.) College, 25-12. Manchester is ranked No. 24 in the DIII rankings. In the championship bout, Olivet defeated Carson-Newman (Tenn.) College, 25-15.
Against Indianapolis, Olivet won six-of-10 matches. The winners were senior Mike Andrews (Swartz Creek) at 174 pounds, freshman Kyle Labrecque (Battle Creek/Lakeview) at 125, senior Ryan Newberry (Grand Junction/South Haven) at 184, sophomore Aaron Stewart (Dansville) at 197, freshman Kyle Vanderhyde (Sparta) at 165 and freshman Rob Yahrmarkt (Sparta) at 141.
The Comets picked-up wins in seven-of-10 matches against Manchester. Andrews, Labrecque and Stewart each won their second match of the day. Also winning were freshman Jason Brew (Sparta) at 149, senior Mike Daubenmeyer (Macomb/Lutheran North) at 165, freshman Keith Sterly (Petoskey) at 285 and freshman Devin Young (Williamston) at 157.
Olivet also claimed wins in six-of-10 matches against Carson-Newman. Andrews and Labrecque improved to 3-0 on the day with wins. Vanderhyde remained perfect on the year against Division III competition with a win. The other three winners were Brew, Yahrmarkt and junior Jeff Wright (Escanaba) at 197.
The Comets are back in action Friday-Saturday, Feb. 3-4, at the Wheaton (Ill.) College Invitational. Action begins Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. CT, followed by Saturday morning at 9 a.m. CT.
