The Olivet College wrestling team won nine-of-10 matches en route to a 41-3 victory over Tri-State (Ind.) University this afternoon at the Upton Center in Olivet.
The Olivet College wrestling team won nine-of-10 matches en route to a 41-3 victory over Tri-State (Ind.) University this afternoon at the Upton Center in Olivet. The Comets, ranked 11th in the latest NCAA Division III national rankings, picked-up four wins by pin, two by major decision and three by minor decision.
Olivet got the match started with a 14-2 major decision win by freshman 125-pounder Kyle Labrecque (Battle Creek/Lakeview). At 133 pounds, senior Kefentse Mandisa (Westland/John Glenn) pinned his opponent in 2:47. Freshman 141-pounder Phil Goodrich (Union City) and freshman 149-pounder Jason Brew (Sparta) were next with minor decision wins, 6-5 and 10-6, respectively.
At 157 pounds, senior Ken Andrews (Swartz Creek) won by pin in 3:31. Senior Mike Daubenmeyer (Clinton Twp./Lutheran North) claimed a 14-5 major decision win at 165 pounds. Senior 174-pounder Mike Andrews (Swartz Creek) won 6-2.
The Comets closed the match with back-to-back wins by pin at 197 and 285 pounds. At 197, senior Jeff Wright (Escanaba) earned his pin in 3:34. At 285, freshman heavyweight Keith Sterly (Petoskey) recorded a first period pin at 1:22.
Olivet is back in action Friday-Saturday, Jan. 13-14, at the North Central College Invitational in Naperville, Ill. Action gets under way Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. CT, and Saturday morning at 9 a.m. CT.
