Women’s lacrosse team drops four weekend games
The Olivet College women’s lacrosse team lost four games this weekend in a swing through the west side of Michigan. On Friday night, the Comets fell to Aquinas College, 17-6. On Saturday, Olivet returned to Aquinas for two games, losing to Midland (Neb.) University, 13-7, and Robert Morris (Ill.) University, 10-8. Today, the Comets were defeated by Grand Valley State University, 25-1.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Olivet College women's lacrosse team lost four games this weekend in a swing through the west side of Michigan. On Friday night, the Comets fell to Aquinas College, 17-6. On Saturday, Olivet returned to Aquinas for two games, losing to Midland (Neb.) University, 13-7, and Robert Morris (Ill.) University, 10-8. Today, the Comets were defeated by Grand Valley State University, 25-1.
Aquinas led Friday's game from start-to-finish. Olivet was led by freshman Geri Merrell (Battle Creek/Lakeview), who scored three goals and four shots. Freshman Mimi Garza (Battle Creek/Pennfield) was next with two goals, while sophomore Alyssa Meny (Marshall) scored once. In net, freshman Sarah Shaw (Grand Haven) made 10 saves, while facing 44 shots.
The Comets and Midland were tied at 4-4 at halftime. The Warriors scored nine of the 12 second-half goals to pull out the win. For Olivet, Garza scored three goals. Senior Cortney Wernette (Remus/Chippewa Hills) had two. Merrell and senior Cara VanDam (Grand Rapids/City) each scored one goal. Shaw collected 11 saves.
Against Robert Morris, the Comets got down by four goals early in the second half, 7-3. Olivet came back with three straight goals to make the score 7-6. The Eagles scored three of the next four goals to go up 10-7 with seven minutes left in the game. The Comets scored with 3:47 left in the game, but they could not get any closer. Scoring goals for Olivet were Merrell (three), Garza (two), VanDam (one) and Wernette (one).
Against Grand Valley, senior Nicole Wernette (Remus/Chippewa Hills) had the Comets' only goal at the halfway point of the first half. Shaw needed to make seven saves on 32 Laker shots.
For the weekend, Merrell scored seven goals, which gives her 16 for the season and moves her into second for a single-season in school history. The record is 24 by Veronica Maidens in 2011. Garza and Cortney Wernette have nine and seven goals, respectively. As a team, Olivet is only nine goals shy of tying the team single-season school record.
The Comets will return to the field Wednesday afternoon when they travel to play Alma College at 4:30 p.m.
