Women’s lacrosse team loses to Robert Morris and North Central
The women’s lacrosse team lost a pair of games in suburban Chicago this weekend. Last night, the Comets fell to Robert Morris University, 16-5, and today, they were defeated by North Central (Ill.) College, 20-3.

Robert Morris jumped out to a 4-0 lead with four goals in the first eight minutes, 45 seconds of the game. Olivet got on the scoreboard with a free-position goal by senior Veronica Maidens (Arcadia/Onekama) midway through the first half. Robert Morris scored twice to make the score 6-1 at halftime.
Like the first half, Robert Morris scored the first four goals of the second half. Maidens made the score 10-2 with an unassisted goal at the 20:50 mark. Robert Morris added two goals before Olivet scored three straight goals, two by Cortney Wernette (Remus/Chippewa Hills) and one by Cara VanDam (Grand Rapids/City). After two Robert Morris goals, VanDam found the back of the net for her second goal of the game. Robert Morris closed the scoring with 23 seconds left.
The Comets finished the game with 17 shots, including seven for Maidens and six for VanDam. Freshman Sara Wegener (St. Johns) was the keeper and recorded 23 saves, while facing 44 shots.
North Central took a 1-0 lead with a goal just 3:01 into the game. Olivet quickly tied the game on a goal by Maidens with 24:39 left in the first half. The Cardinals responded with five straight goals, including three in a span of 51 seconds. Maidens stopped the streak with an unassisted goal at the 13:26 mark.
North Central put another point on the scoreboard with a free-position goal at the 11:37 mark. The Comets won the draw, and freshman Ashley Hettinger (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Central) scored her first collegiate goal only 16 seconds later to make the score 7-3. The Cardinals came back with six consecutive goals to take a 13-3 lead, which was also the margin at halftime. North Central kept the scoring going in the second half, extending its streak of unanswered goals to 13.
For the game, Olivet recorded 10 total shots. Maidens led the way with six. Sophomore Kate Cole (Union City) played all 60 minutes in goal. She faced 54 shots and made a season-high 22 saves.
The Comets (2-5) will next be in action Tuesday night at Alma College in a rescheduled game at 7 p.m. and Wednesday night when Trine (Ind.) University visits the Cutler Athletic Complex for a 6 p.m. game.
