NORMAL, Ill. – The Olivet College women's golf team is in seventh-place after the first round of the 2014 Illinois Wesleyan University Spring Fling at the Ironwood Golf Course in Normal. Tomorrow's second round features at 9 a.m. CST shotgun start.
The Comets posted a 348 team score to sit five strokes behind sixth-place North Central (Ill.) College. Washington University-St. Louis (Mo.) is the first-round leader with a 319. The host Titans are second at 322, with the rest of the top five being DePauw (Ind.) University, 325; Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) College, 331; and University of Wis.-Stout, 334.
Olivet was led by senior Ashley Stark (Grass Lake), who carded a 13-over par 85. Senior Adrienne Plourde (Livonia/Redford Thurston) was two strokes behind with an 87.
Senior Theresa Damico (White Lake/Lakeland) and sophomore Brooke Kastamo (Hartland) both shot an 88. Sophomore Casey Lamp (Kalamazoo/Hackett Catholic) completed her round in 89 strokes. Kastamo was only one-of-two golfers to have a birdie on the par 3, 165-yard fourth hole.
Following tomorrow's round, Olivet will turn its attention to the three-round MIAA Playoff, which will determine the league's automatic bid to the 2014 NCAA Division III National Championships. The first round will be played next Wednesday, April 16, at the Blackthorn Golf Course in South Bend, Ind.
