Women’s golf team places second at O’Brien National Invitational
In a field of nine teams, including six nationally-ranked teams, the Olivet College women’s golf team placed second at the O’Brien National Invitational, which was hosted by Saint Mary’s (Ind.) College.
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – In a field of nine teams, including six nationally-ranked teams, the Olivet College women's golf team placed second at the O'Brien National Invitational, which was hosted by Saint Mary's (Ind.) College and played at the Warren Golf Course in South Bend, Indiana. Senior Theresa Damico (White Lake/Lakeland) was second in the player standings to land a spot on the all-tournament team.
Ranked No. 17 in the Women's Golf Coaches Association Preseason poll, the Comets posted a two-round score of 647 (327-320) strokes. No. 4 DePauw (Ind.) University took first-place with a 626 (316-310). No. 11 Centre (Ky.) College finished in third at 651 (323-328), followed by No. 3 Washington University in St. Louis, 652 (332-320); Saint Mary's, 671 (333-338); No. 6 George Fox (Ore.) University, 672 (332-340); No. 10 Southwestern (Texas) University, 682 (332-350); Otterbein (Ohio) University, 705 (343-362); and Franklin (Ind.) College, 711 (365-346). Paige Gooch from DePauw was the tournament medalist with a 151 (79-72).
Damico carded a two-round total of 154 strokes. After being seven-over-par yesterday, she improved by two strokes today with a 76. For the tournament, Damico was first in par 4 scoring at +7 and third in par 5 scoring at even. She was second with four birdies.
Senior Adrienne Plourde (Livonia/Redford Thurston) was seventh in the player standings with a 158. After shooting an 83 in Sunday's first round, she lowered her score by eight strokes better today with a team-best 75.
Sophomore Casey Lamp (Kalamazoo/Hackett Catholic) had a two-round total of 164 (83-81) strokes. Sophomore Brooke Kastamo (Howell/Hartland) was next at 173 (87-86), while senior Ashley Stark (Grass Lake) recorded a 179 (85-94).
The Comets will now focus on defending their Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) championship. They will play the first of six MIAA rounds next Tuesday, Sept. 24, at The Medalist Golf in Marshall.
