Women’s golf team finishes in second-place at Labor Day Tee-Off Tournament
Led by senior Theresa Damico’s medalist honors, the No. 17 Olivet College women’s golf team finished in second-place at the 2013 O.C. Labor Day Tee-Off Tournament at The Medalist Golf Club in Marshall.
MARSHALL, Mich. – Led by senior Theresa Damico's (White Lake/Lakeland) medalist honors, the No. 17 Olivet College women's golf team finished in second-place at the 2013 O.C. Labor Day Tee-Off Tournament at The Medalist Golf Club in Marshall. The eight-team field featured four teams ranked in the Top 25 of the 2013-14 Golf World Preseason Coaches' Poll and another three teams, who received votes in the poll.
In today's second round, the Comets posted a tournament-best 319 team score to give them a two-round of 634 strokes. No. 2 Washington University in St. Louis captured the team title with a 628 (308-320). Saint Mary's (Ind.) College placed third at 672 (338-334), followed by No. 14 Wittenberg (Ohio) University, 674 (342-332); Baldwin Wallace (Ohio) University, 681 (343-338); No. 9 Illinois Wesleyan University, 700 (343-357); Adrian College, 722 (357-365); and Franklin (Ind.) College, 728 (347-381).
Celebrating her 21st birthday today, Damico edged teammate Adrienne Plourde (Livonia/Redford Thurston) and Olivia Lugar from Washington for medalist honors by one stroke, 150-151. The top spot came down to the last hole, where Damico made a par on the par four, 315-yard No. 18, while Lugar had a bogey.
Damico had a 76 in today's final round. It featured one birdie, 12 pars and five bogies. Plourde earned a spot on the all-tournament team with her 151. She shot a tournament-best 74 in today's round, including two birdies.
Senior Ashley Stark (Grass Lake) finished in 12th-place in the player standings with a two-round total of 166 (81-85) strokes. Sophomores Brooke Kastamo (Howell/Hartland) and Casey Lamp (Kalamazoo/Hackett Catholic) both carded two-day scores of 169 to tie for 15th-place.
Playing as individual scorer, sophomore Kirstin Langer (Battle Creek/Pennfield) was ninth in the player standings with a 163 (79-84). Freshman Allyson Schultz (Traverse City/Central) had a 179 (88-91) and freshman Laura Bacso (Trenton) completed her two rounds in 199 total strokes.
The Comets will return to The Medalist Friday and Saturday, Sept. 6-7, for the 2013 O.C. Fall Invitational. Both days have a shotgun start, 2 p.m. on Friday afternoon and 9 a.m. on Saturday morning.
NOTES: The 634 is the second-best 36-hole team score in school history. Damico's 150 ties for the second-best 36-hole individual score in school history, while Plourde's 151 ties for the fifth-best 36-hole score.
