The Olivet College women's golf team has received one of eight at-large bids to participate in the 2011 NCAA Division III National Championships. An NCAA Committee announced tonight the 19 teams and six individuals that will participate.
Eleven conferences were granted automatic qualification and the remaining eight teams were selected on an at-large basis from conferences and the remaining independent institutions. Six individuals, not from selected teams, also were selected for the championships.
The championships will consist of both team and individual competition conducted concurrently. The tournament consists of 72 holes of play over four days of competition. In the team competition, the low four scores from each team for each day will count in the team's total score.
The championships will be conducted May 10-13 at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida. Oglethorpe University and the Central Florida Sports Commission will serve as hosts.
The Comets are No. 11 in the latest Golfstat.com NCAA Head-to-Head rankings and tied for No. 18 in the latest Golf World/NCAA Division III Coaches' Poll. Representing them at the championships will be seniors Amber Conrad, of Battle Creek; and Abby Wheeler, of Grayling; junior Lauren Campbell, of Fenton; and freshmen Theresa Damico, of White Lake; and Adrienne Jones, of Redford.
Olivet is making its fifth straight trip to the national championships. The Comets were ninth in 2007, 11th in 2008, tied for 11th in 2009 and 11th in 2010.
