Women’s golf team is second at MIAA Championships, places second in the overall league standings
The women’s golf team placed second at the 2010 MIAA Championships at the Bedford Valley Country Club. In addition, the Comets were second in the overall league standings.
BATTLE CREEK, Mich. -- The Olivet College women's golf team placed second at the 2010 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Championships at the Bedford Valley Country Club in Battle Creek. In addition, the Comets were second in the overall league standings, with senior Amber Conrad (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) and junior Lauren Campbell (Fenton) earning first-team All-MIAA honors. Freshman Theresa Damico (White Lake/Lakeland) and senior Abby Wheeler (Grayling) earned second-team All-MIAA honors. Campbell, Conrad and freshman Adrienne Jones (Redford/Thurston) were named to the all-tournament with their top 10 finishes.
At the championships, Olivet had a two-round total of 648 strokes. Saint Mary's (Ind.) College took first-place with a 635, including a 312 in today's round. Hope was third at 675, followed by Trine 722, Adrian 729, Calvin 733, Albion 741, Alma 769 and Kalamazoo 820.
Wheeler led the Comets with a 160, which placed her third in the player standings. Campbell and Conrad were sixth and seventh with a 163 and 164, respectively. Jones was part of a tie for 10th with a 166. Damico completed her two rounds in 168 strokes.
Saint Mary's won its second straight MIAA championship, totaling 1,959 strokes over six rounds. Olivet had 1,996 strokes. Hope was third at 2,074, followed by Trine 2,184; Albion 2,187; Adrian 2,219; Calvin 2,305; Alma 2,330; and Kalamazoo 2,549.
With her first-team All-MIAA award, Conrad has earned the honor for the fourth consecutive year. She is the second female student-athlete in school history to be a four-time first-team selection. The other was golfer Lindsay Pipkin from 2005-08. After earning second-team All-MIAA honors as a freshman and sophomore, Campbell is a first-team selection this year. Wheeler is a second-team All-MIAA selection for the second straight season.
