The Olivet College women's golf team climbed two spots in the team rankings and now stands in ninth-place after the third round of the NCAA Division III National Championships at the El Campeon Golf Course at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. Tomorrow's fourth and final round begins for Olivet with tee times, starting at noon on the 10th hole.
In today's round, the Comets lowered their team score by 22 strokes for a round of 330 strokes. Their three-round total is 1,034 strokes, only two strokes ahead of 10th-place Allegheny (Pa.) College and seven strokes behind eighth-place Middlebury (Vt.) College. Methodist (N.C.) University continues to lead the 20-team field with a total of 915 strokes.
Today, the Comets were led by senior Kristy Latimer (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) who had an 80. At the turn, she was three-over par after bogeying the fourth, fifth and sixth holes. On the back nine, Latimer was even par until the final three holes where she had a bogey on the 16th, double bogey on the 17th and bogey on the 18th.
Following Latimer was freshman Megan Rimmel (Ithaca) who returned to the clubhouse with an 81. She began the day with a bogey on holes two and five, got back to even par with a birdie at holes six and seven and closed the front nine with a bogey on the final hole. Five straight bogeys to start the back nine and a double bogey on the 18th hole put her at eight-over par for the round.
Sophomore Lindsay Pipkin (White Lake/Lakeland) was next with an 83. After shooting eight-over par on the first nine holes, she was two-over on the back nine. Sophomore Trisha McKim (DeWitt) had a balanced round of 86 strokes, as she was seven-over on the front nine and six-over on the back nine. Senior Stephanie Nicolai (Shelbyville/Wayland Union) finished with a 92. After going 15-over par in the first nine holes, she came back strong on the back nine to go only four-over par.
Latimer and Pipkin are tied with three-round totals of 254 strokes. McKim is next at 265, followed by Rimmel and Nicolai at 271 and 279, respectively.
