OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College softball team lost both games of a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) doubleheader, 11-0 and 8-0, this afternoon at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
In the first game, the Flying Dutch scored five unearned runs in the second inning before scoring three runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Hope starting pitcher Kate Laverty faced the minimum number of batters until the fifth inning when the Comets were able to load the bases with one out. Laverty got out of the jam by recording a strikeout for the second and fly out to end the game.
Offensively, Olivet was limited to four base hits. Senior Ciara Santos (Lansing/Everett) went 2-for-2, while junior Terri Hurosky (Nashville/Maple Valley) and senior Alison Iuelle (Kelloggsville) each had one hit. Sophomore Jessica Duell (Ionia) was the losing pitcher, as she gave up three earned runs on nine hits in the first four innings.
In the nightcap, the Flying Dutch plated one run in the first, two more runs in the second, one run in the third and four runs in the fifth. The Comets left runners stranded in scoring position in every inning except the first. Five different Olivet players each had a base hit. The lone extra base hit was a double by senior Marlene Packer (Grand Rapids/Creston). Duell was tagged with the pitching, as she allowed seven earned runs on 11 hits.
The Comets host Trine (Ind.) University Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
