Day one of MIAA Field Day complete for Olivet College track & field teams
The first day of the 122nd Annual Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Field Day at the Gordon M. Brewer Track in Holland is complete for Olivet College. The Comets had four student-athletes earn team points in today’s field events, while seven athletes ran fast enough in the preliminaries to advance to the finals tomorrow afternoon.
Wegener breaks school record
HOLLAND, Mich. – The first day of the 122nd Annual Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Field Day at the Gordon M. Brewer Track in Holland is complete for Olivet College. The Comets had four student-athletes earn team points in today's field events, while seven athletes ran fast enough in the preliminaries to advance to the finals tomorrow afternoon.
WOMEN
Despite finishing in second-place, junior Sara Wegener shattered the school record in the hammer throw with a 136 foot toss. She beat her own school record by 11 feet, 1 inch. Wegener also scored fourth-place points in the discus throw with a 115 feet, 4 inch toss.
Freshmen Danielle Hoffman and Lauren Easton placed in the pole vault. Hoffman finished in a tie for sixth-place with a 9 feet, ¼ inch clearance. Easton cleared 8 feet, 6¼ inches to tie for eighth-place.
Sophomore Cassie Ciaravino placed seventh in the long jump, leaping 15 feet, 10¼ inches.
On the track, Ciaravino posted the top preliminary time in the 100-meter hurdles. She finished the race in 15.46 seconds, which was almost ½ second faster than the second-place time. Junior Jenna Mayle will run the finals of the 400-meter hurdles after posting the seventh-fastest prelim time at 1:10.16.
MEN
Sophomore Jalen Weaver turned in the fastest time in the preliminaries of the 800-meter run at 1:54.45. The Comet men will have three athletes in the finals of the 100-meter dash. Sophomore Henry Pettway tied for the third-fastest time at 11.17 seconds, while freshman Damien Johnson tied for fifth at 11.19 seconds and freshman Travon Tatum was sixth at 11.37 seconds.
Johnson and Pettway will also run in the finals of the 200-meter dash. Johnson won his preliminary heat with a time of 22.57 seconds and was third fastest. Pettway was seventh-quickest at 22.70 seconds.
Sophomore Billyle Alman has moved onto the finals of the 400-meter hurdles with the seventh-fastest prelim time at 58.80 seconds.
Finals in seven field events (three women and four men) will get started tomorrow morning at 10 a.m., followed by running event finals at 1:30 p.m.
