Track and field teams open season at MIAA Indoor Invitational
The Olivet College track and field teams began the 2010 season by participating in the 2010 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Indoor Invitational Saturday, Feb. 27. Trine (Ind.) University hosted the meet inside the Keith E. Busse/Steel Dynamics Athletic and Recreation Center in Angola.
The Olivet College track and field teams began the 2010 season by participating in the 2010 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Indoor Invitational Saturday, Feb. 27. Trine (Ind.) University hosted the meet inside the Keith E. Busse/Steel Dynamics Athletic and Recreation Center in Angola.
For the men, sophomore James Williams (Battle Creek/Central) finished in second-place in the 60-meter dash, crossing the line in 7.14 seconds. Sophomore Mike Martin (Caledonia/Wayland Union) placed sixth in the 60-meter dash (7.28 seconds). Martin was also third in the 200-meter dash, finishing in 23.20 seconds. Freshman Justin Walters (Clarksville/Lakewood) was part of a three-way tie for seventh-place in the high jump. He cleared the bar at 1.73 meters (5 feet, 8 inches).
For the women, sophomore Heather Nicklaw (Springport) was the highest finisher. She tied for second in the high jump, clearing the bar at 1.52 meters (4 feet, 11.75 inches). Junior Ellen Schulz (Freeland) placed sixth in the 400-meter dash, finishing in 1:05.68. The only other Top 10 finish was turned in by sophomore Heather Huggett (Battle Creek/Harper Creek). She was 10th in the shot put, throwing it 8.93 meters (29 feet, 3.75 inches).
Olivet is now idle until Friday, April 2, when it competes at the Defiance (Ohio) College Yellow Jacket Open. Action gets started at 10 a.m.
