Track and field teams complete first day of competition at MIAA Field Day
The Olivet College men’s and women’s track and field teams have completed the first day of competition at the 115th Annual Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Field Day, which is being hosted by Albion College.
The Olivet College men's and women's track and field teams have completed the first day of competition at the 115th Annual Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Field Day, which is being hosted by Albion College. Tomorrow's action begins with finals in field events at 10 a.m., followed by running event finals at 1:30 p.m.
On the men's side, the Comets have seven points. The highest finisher was junior Robert Horton (Charlotte), who placed fifth in the shot put with a 45 feet, 7 inch toss. Also scoring team points was sophomore John Zenner (Kingsley) as he finished in sixth-place in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 12 feet, 6 inches. Freshman Tonia Ramsey (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) was the only Olivet female athlete to place in the top eight. She was fifth in the discus throw with a 111 feet, 10 inch toss.
In the preliminaries of running events, Olivet advanced five student-athletes to tomorrow's finals. Freshman Lonnie White (Battle Creek/Central) has qualified for the 110- and 400-meter hurdles after clocking in with times of 15.34 and 58.83 seconds, respectively. His time in the 110 hurdles was only .05 seconds behind Kelby McClelland from Calvin College
Juniors Robert Banks (Detroit/Benedictine) and Randy Place (Bellevue) will compete in the finals of the 400-meter dash. Place was fifth quickest at 52.02 seconds, followed by Banks at eighth quickest at 52.83 seconds.
On the women's side, sophomores Donna Cripe (Vermontville/ Maple Valley) and Hannah Robbins (Marshall) will run in the finals. Cripe advanced in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.28 seconds. Robbins qualified in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:13.07.
