Track and field teams open 2006 season at Mints Link Laker Challenger
The Olivet College men’s and women’s track and field teams opened their 2006 season tonight by participating in the Mints Link Laker Challenge. The unscored meet was hosted by Grand Valley State University (GVSU).
The Olivet College men's and women's track and field teams opened their 2006 season tonight by participating in the Mints Link Laker Challenge. The unscored meet was hosted by Grand Valley State University (GVSU).
On the men's side, the top finisher was freshman Rayner Hamilton (Jackson). He was second in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.52 seconds, which was just .02 seconds off a NCAA Division III Indoor Track/Field Championships provisional qualifying time. In the preliminaries, Hamilton tied for the second fastest time (6.65 seconds). Freshman Lonnie White (Battle Creek/Central) clocked in fourth in the 55-meter hurdles (8.29 seconds).
In field events, juniors Bobby Horton (Charlotte) and Josh Beischer (Capac) placed third and fourth, respectively in the shot put. Horton's best throw 45 feet, 4.50 inch toss, while Beischer's best was 43 feet, 11.75 inches.
On the women's side, sophomore Donna Cripe (Vermontville/Maple Valley) recorded Olivet's only top-five finish as she was fourth in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.96 seconds. Cripe qualified for the finals with the sixth fastest time during the prelims.
The Comets make the trip back to GVSU next Friday, Jan. 27, for the Bob Eubanks Open Meet at 4 p.m.
