Mens track/field team sweeps MIAA double dual with Adrian and TSU
Bolstered by seven first-place finishes, the mens track/field team swept a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) double dual meet this afternoon at Adrian College. The Fighting Comets beat the host Bulldogs, 116-69, and Tri-State (Ind.) University, 99-89.

Individual first-place finishes were by freshman Robert Banks (Detroit/Benedictine) in the high jump (54), freshman Bryan Bonner (Mt. Clemens) in the 100-meter dash (:12.27), junior Ben Kunzelman (Stockbridge) in the javelin (1448), junior Randy Place (Bellevue) in the 400-meter dash (:43.38) and freshman John Zenner (Kingsley) in the 110-meter high hurdles (:18.66).
Banks, Bonner, Place and freshman Jerry Fields (Mount Morris) claimed first-place in the 4x100-meter relay (:46.50). Banks and Place joined freshmen Joel Gyoromy (North Branch) and Nate Hughes (Marshall) to place first in the 4x400-meter relay (3:34.51).
Banks led a 1-2-3 Olivet finish in the high jump. Banks, Andy Weiss (Fremont) and Gyoromy all cleared the bar at 54. Based on the number of attempts it took to clear the bar, they were awarded first to third-place, respectively.
The Comets had seven additional second-place finishes. On the track, Bonner was second in the 200-meter dash (:24.26) and Hughes placed second in the 800-meter run (2:06.27). The rest of the second-places were in field events Fields in the long jump (188), sophomore Robert Horton (Charlotte) in the discus throw (1308), Kunzelman in the shot put (432), Weiss in the pole vault (96) and Zenner in the triple jump (322.50).
Olivet will next compete March 29-30 at the Hillsdale College Gina Relays. The 2005 MIAA Championships are Thursday-Friday, May 5-6, at Hope College.
