Outdoor Track and Field Teams Compete at the 2003 MIAA Field Day
The Olivet College men's and women's outdoor track and field team competed May 2-3 at the 2003 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Field Day held at Alma College.
ALMA, Mich. – The Olivet College men's and women's outdoor track and field team competed May 2-3 at the 2003 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Field Day held at Alma College.
Leading the way for the Fighting Comets was freshman Dan Kimball (National City High School), who broke the school record in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:12.79. The previous mark was a time of 4:13.30 by Tim Tatarka in 1999.
In other running events, senior Steve Szokola (Marysville High School) was eighth in the 5,000-meter run (16:54.18) and sophomore Kevin Kreh (Kinde/Huron High School) set a personal-best (PR) with ninth-place finish in the 800-meter run (2:02.20).
In field events, senior Benji Garza (Holland High School) was the top men's finisher. He was fifth in the javelin with a 164'6" throw and set a PR in the shot put (43'2"). Senior Trent Harvey (Charlotte/Maple Valley High School) finished in eighth in both the discus and javelin with tosses of 137'0" and 151'1", respectively. Freshman Joe Cox (Flint/Carman-Ainsworth High School) was ninth in the shot put (42'7") and recorded a 12 foot PR in the javelin (142'9").
Junior Shannon McHigh (Manistique High School) led the Comets with a pair of top-five finishes. She was fourth in the javelin with a PR throw of 100'0" and fifth in the high jump (4'8").
In addition, freshman Michele Michalek (Stanton/Central Montcalm High School) finished seventh in the discus (100'8.50"), freshman Rebecca Dawson (Elk Rapids High School) was ninth in the 10,000-meter run (42:58.36) and freshman Bethany VanHaitsma (Marion High School) was 10th in the pole vault (7'6").
