Indoor track and field teams open season at Saginaw Valley State University
The Olivet College men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams opened the 2003 season last Friday at the Saginaw Valley State University Cardinal Collegiate Open. It was an unscored meet.
UNIVERSITY CENTER, MI. -- The Olivet College men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams opened the 2003 season last Friday at the Saginaw Valley State University Cardinal Collegiate Open. It was an unscored meet.
Leading the way for the Lady Comets were junior Bethany Poyer (Olivet/Maple Valley High School) and freshman Caroline Chard (Union City High School). Poyer was fifth in the 400 meter dash (1:12.79) and eighth in the 200 meter dash (30.76). Chard finished in sixth place in the 60 meter hurdles (10.82) and ninth in the 200 meter dash (30.78). In addition, junior Andrea Johnson (Ravenna High School) was eighth in the shot put (32’1.50").
Sophomore Josh Toussaint (Lansing Sexton High School) led the Fighting Comets with a pair of top five finishes. He was second in the 60 meter dash (7.09) and third in the 200 meter dash (23.55). Freshman Joe Cox (Flint/Carman-Ainsworth High School) finished in fifth in the shot put (43’2.50") while senior Benji Garza (Holland High School) was ninth (39’1.50"). Sophomore Matt Kunzelman (Stockbridge High School) was fifth in the 400 meter dash (55.12).
"I am very pleased with our performance," said Head Coach Keith Christy. "This was a good first meet for us to get our feet wet and set a base for where we are."
Olivet will next compete this Friday, Jan. 24 when it returns to SVSU for another open meet.
