Junior Jill Lingbeek (Plainwell) and sophomore Katherine Roesch (Oakland Twp./Lake Orion) were selected to the women’s team while freshmen Brian Jaffee (Bowling Green, Ohio) and Dustin Meisner (Temperance/Erie Mason) were named to the men’s team. All-MIAA selections are based on a swimmer’s performance at the MIAA Championships.
Lingbeek and Roesch led the Lady Comets to a fourth-place finish at the MIAA Championships. Jaffee, Meisner and the Fighting Comets finished in second-place.
Lingbeek broke the school record in three events. She was first in the 100 butterfly (:57.32), 100 backstroke (:58.71) and 200 butterfly (2:08.78). Lingbeek’s times in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke are automatic qualifying times for the 2005 NCAA Division III Women’s National Championships to be held March 10-12 at the Holland Community Aquatic Center (HCAC). Furthermore, she broke the MIAA record in the 100 fly. Lingbeek was a 2004 All-MIAA pick.
Roesch swam to second-place finishes in the 100 backstroke (1:00.96) and 200 backstroke (2:11.07) and a fifth-place finish in the 500 freestyle (5:17.29). The times in the 200 backstroke and 500 freestyle are school records.
Lingbeek and Roesch were part of the third-place 400 medley relay (4:06.59), fourth-place 200 medley relay (1:53.46) and fourth-place 400 freestyle relay (3:42.32). Lingbeek swam a leg of the fourth-place 200 freestyle relay (1:42.88) and Roesch was on the fourth-place 800 freestyle relay (8:13.22).
Jaffee was second in the 1,650 freestyle (16:20.74), third in the 500 freestyle (4:41.79) and fourth in the 400 individual medley (4:22.06). All three times are new school records. His time in the 1,650 freestyle is a NCAA Championships provisional qualifying time. Jaffee was also on the fourth-place 800 freestyle relay (7:10.83).
Meisner captured Olivet’s first-ever men’s individual championship with his victory in the 200 breaststroke (2:05.62). He was also second in the 100 breaststroke (:57.58) and ninth in the 200 individual medley (2:02.05). All three times are new school records. In addition, Meisner’s preliminary time in the 100 breaststroke (:57.29) and finals time in the 200 breaststroke are NCAA Championships provisional qualifying cuts. He swam the breaststroke leg of the third-place 400 medley relay (3:32.78) and fourth-place 200 medley relay (1:37.63).
The 2005 NCAA Division III Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships are March 17-19 at the HCAC. Jaffee and Meisner will find out March 4 if their times will make the championships.
