Men's swim and dive team wins first-ever MIAA dual meet
The Olivet College men's swimming and diving team opened its 2003-04 season today in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association double dual meet at Calvin College in Grand Rapids.
The Olivet College men's swimming and diving team opened its 2003-04 season today in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association double dual meet at Calvin College in Grand Rapids.
The men defeated MIAA rival Albion College, 125-115. It is the first-ever dual meet win in school history for Olivet. Against Calvin, the Fighting Comets fell 122-104.
Olivet broke 10 school records in swimming events. Freshman Jon Cox (Battle Creek/Lakeview High School) set school records in the 100 breastroke (1:04.79) and 200 individual medley (2:12.50). Freshman John Johnson (Grand Blanc High School) broke records in the 500 freestyle (5:02.35) and 1000 free (10:31.11). Freshman Levi Yockey (Phoenix, Ariz./North High School) set records in the 100 and 200 free (:51.09 and 1:50.43, respectively).
Also setting records were freshmen Juan Aguirre (Queretaro, Mexico) in the 100 backstroke (:59.09) and Anata Fetters (Fennville/Holland High School) in the 100 butterfly (:56.67).
Aguirre, Cox, Fetters and Yockey teamed up to break the school record in the 200 medley relay (1:43.80). Johnson and Williams joined freshmen Matt Powers (Kalamazoo/Central High School) and Paul Riha (East Grand Rapids High School) to set a school record in the 200 free relay (1:34.36).
Placements were only available for the diving action. Olivet's top diver was freshman Andy Weiss (Fremont High School).
Olivet returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 8, when it hosts for a scrimmage against Hillsdale College at 11 a.m. The next "official" meet for the men is at the Wabash (Ind.) Invitational on Nov. 22.
