The Olivet College men’s swimming and diving team came up just short, 126-116, in knocking off defending Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association champion Kalamazoo College on Friday evening.
The outcome of the meet was decided after the Hornets edged the Fighting Comets by .82 seconds at the wall in the final event, 200 freestyle relay. Juan Aguirre (Queretaro, Mexico), Matt Powers (Kalamazoo Central High School), Paul Riha (East Grand Rapids High School) and Levi Yockey (Phoenix, Ariz./North High School) broke the school record with a time 1:03.99.
Individually, Aguirre and Yockey led Olivet with two first-place finishes apiece. Aguirre captured the 50 free (22.51) and 100 backstroke (49.59). Yockey won the 100 and 200 free with times of 49.59 and 1:48.76, respectively.
In addition, Ananta Fetters (Fennville/Holland High School) was first and broke his own school record in the 100 butterfly (55.18). Brad Waddell (Holland/West Ottawa High School) finished first in the 1000 free (10:31.75).
Olivet will next be in action on Friday-Saturday, January 23-24, when it travels to Ohio for a pair of non-league dual meets. On Friday evening, the Comets will compete at Oberlin College, and on Saturday, they will compete against John Carroll University.
