Men’s lacrosse team loses to Beloit, 11-10
A three-goal deficit in the final quarter proved to be too much to overcome, as the Olivet College men’s lacrosse team suffered an 11-10 loss to Beloit (Wis.) College today at Strong Stadium in Beloit.
BELOIT, Wis. – A three-goal deficit in the final quarter proved to be too much to overcome, as the Olivet College men's lacrosse team suffered an 11-10 loss to Beloit (Wis.) College today at Strong Stadium in Beloit. The loss snapped Olivet's six-game winning streak.
Freshman James Collins (Lowell) put the Comets ahead 1-0 with a goal off a pass from freshman Matt Arb (Troy/Athens) at the 13:01 mark. After Beloit tied the game at 1-1, Olivet regained the lead on a goal by freshman Dakota Badder (Troy/Athens) with 3:42 left in the quarter. The Buccaneers knotted the score at 2-2 with a goal just before the end of the opening quarter.
Beloit took its first lead of the game in the second minute of the second quarter. Arb made the score 3-3 on a goal off an assist from freshman Holden Price (Mason) at the 8:02 mark. Freshman Cameron Bazin (Troy/Athens) gave the lead back to the Comets with a goal with 5:40 left before halftime. The Buccaneers scored the final three goals of the first half to take a 6-4 lead at the break.
Olivet cut its deficit down to one goal on a man-down goal by freshman Jack Ranson (Nobleton, Ontario, Canada / St. Michael's) two minutes into the third quarter. Beloit quickly extended its lead back to two goals, 7-5. The Comets won the faceoff and Bazin scored only 14 seconds later to make the score 7-6. Olivet then tied the game, 7-7, when Bazin found the back of the net. The Buccaneers responded with two goals for a 9-7 lead at the end of the third stanza.
Collins trimmed Olivet's to 9-8 with a goal just 43 seconds into the fourth quarter. Beloit stretched its lead to 11-8 at the 10:16 mark. The Comets scored twice to make the score 11-10 and had a couple potential game-tying shots saved in the final seconds of the game.
For the game, Arb topped the team with five points on one goal and four assists. Bazin recorded four goals. Badder finished with three points (two goals and one assist). Collins had two goals, while Ranson had two points (one goal and one assist). Freshman Jordan Stover (Clarkston) won 11-of-15 face-offs. In the cage, sophomore Ryan McGee (Traverse City/Central) collected 12 saves on 38 Beloit shots.
Olivet will travel to play University of Mount Union (Ohio) next Saturday, March 30, at 2 p.m. The game is a part of a lacrosse doubleheader with the Purple Raiders, as the Olivet women will play UMU before the men's game at noon.
