Men’s basketball team falls to Concordia, 104-92
The Olivet College men’s basketball team dropped a 104-92 decision to Concordia University in a non-conference contest this afternoon inside The Cutler Event Center in Olivet.
OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College men's basketball team dropped a 104-92 decision to Concordia University in a non-conference contest this afternoon inside The Cutler Event Center in Olivet.
The first half was a game of big scoring runs for both teams. The Cardinals led by 10 points, 19-9, with 12:30 left. Over the next three minutes, the Comets scored 12 of the next 14 points to knot the score at 21-21. The teams traded baskets until a three-pointer by freshman Kevin Woodson (Lambertville/Monroe St. Mary Catholic) put Olivet ahead for the first time, 29-28.
Concordia came back with a six straight points to take a 34-29 lead. The Comets responded with a 10-2 run for a 39-36 lead. The Cardinals ended the half on an 8-2 run to gain a 44-41 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Concordia stretched its lead to 11 points, 60-49. Olivet fought back and trailed by only three points two times, with the last time being 65-62. The Cardinals came back and led by 12 points on three occasions, including 82-70, at the 7:10 mark.
Olivet did not go away, as it closed to within three points two more times. After the last time, Concordia scored nine straight points to go up double digits and stayed that way for the remainder of the game.
Junior Blake Krum (Schoolcraft) led the Comets with 25 points. Sophomore T.J. Vondette (Hemlock) and junior Jordan Union (Jackson) joined them in double figures with 18 and 17 points, respectively. Playing his first game of the season, freshman Adam Rayner (Muskegon/Mona Shores) grabbed a team-leading seven rebounds.
For the Cardinals, Josh Fugate came off the bench to lead all scorers with 31 points. He was 8-of-13 from the floor, with six triples, and 9-of-9 from the free throw line. Joe Remstad recorded a double-double, 17 points and game-high 10 rebounds.
Olivet is now off until Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 28-29 when it participates in the 2013 University of Mount Union M-Club Classic. The Comets play Hiram (Ohio) College Saturday night at 5 p.m. and the host Purple Raiders Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m.
