Baseball team swept at Mount St. Joseph, 8-5 and 14-7
FLORENCE, Ky. – The Olivet College baseball team was swept by Mount St. Joseph (Ohio) University in a non-conference doubleheader this afternoon at UC Health Stadium. The Lions scored three late runs to win the opener, 8-5, before winning the nightcap by a 14-6 final score.

FLORENCE, Ky. – The Olivet College baseball team was swept by Mount St. Joseph (Ohio) University in a non-conference doubleheader this afternoon at UC Health Stadium. The Lions scored three late runs to win the opener, 8-5, before winning the nightcap by a 14-6 final score.

- There was no scoring until the fourth inning when the Lions used a lead-off double, followed by a sacrifice run and RBI-single scored the run.
- Mount St. Joseph added another run in the fifth on a triple and RBI-ground out. Later in the inning, the Lions loaded the bases with just one out, but the Comets wiggled out of the jam with an out at the plate and flyout to end the inning.
- The Comets pushed across five runs in the top half of the sixth. Senior Trevor Savage drew a walk to start the inning. On a hit-and-run play, senior Matt Hewitt doubled to the right-center field gap to score Savage from first base. A two-out RBI-single by senior Logan Sella brought home Hewitt with the tying run. Senior Ben Compton's double put two runners in scoring position before sophomore Gabriel Kirck cleared the bases with a home run over the fence in right-center field.
- In the home half of the sixth, the Lions immediately answered with three runs to knot the score at 5-5.
- Mount St. Joseph took advantage of an Olivet throwing error to plate the go-ahead run in the seventh inning.
- The Lions scored two insurance runs in the eighth to stretch their lead to 8-5.
- The Comets went down 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth.
- Olivet recorded eight hits in the game.
- Hewitt finished with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate.
- Compton had two hits.
- Sophomore Keegan Kuha started on the mound but did not factor in the pitching decision. He gave up five runs on 11 hits over six innings.
- Senior Drew Smith was tagged with the loss, as he allowed three runs on four hits over an inning and one-third.
- Caleb Partin had four hits (two doubles, one single and one home run) from the nine-hole spot of the lineup. He drove in two and scored two runs.
- Ryan Murray and Joshua Hagans tallied three hits apiece.
- Ryan Caulfield picked-up the pitching win in relief of starter Derek Richter. They combined to yield the five runs over seven innings.
- Brice McGee earned the save with one and one-third innings of relief.
- The Comets took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the third inning.
- The Lions responded with four runs in the bottom half of the third. The big blast of the frame was a three-run homer by Murray.
- Olivet closed the gap to 4-3 on a two-run single by Savage in the fourth inning.
- In its half of the fourth, Mount St. Joseph scored three runs to extend its lead back to four runs, 7-3.
- Both teams plated a run in their half of the fifth inning to keep a four-run differential, 8-4.
- After a Lions' run in the sixth, a sacrifice fly for the Comets in the seventh inning made the score 9-5.
- Olivet scored a run in the top of eighth before Mount St. Joseph pushed across five runs in the bottom half of the inning to break the game open, 14-6.
- The Comets plated their final run in the ninth.
- Kirck went 3-for-4 with two RBI.
- Freshman Ben Helgevold also registered three hits.
- Savage and freshman Sylas Woll each had two hits.
- Senior Max Daust suffered the pitching loss after surrendering seven runs on six hits over the first three and one-third innings.
- Murray had two hits and collected six RBI. He also walked two times.
- Jake Lawson tallied two hits.
- Matt Brankamp finished with two hits, three runs and two RBI.
- Aidan Post threw five and two-thirds innings to post the pitching victory and Evan Webb earned a save after throwing the final three and one-third innings.
- Olivet heads to Chicago to play Saint Xavier (Ill.) University next Wednesday, April 23, at 3 p.m. ET/2 p.m. CT.
